Don’t impose career choices on children - Parents advised

The Guidance and Counselling Coordinator at the Ablekuma Central Sub Metro Education Service, Mrs Eva Eyi Worwame Afful, has advised parents not to impose their career choices on their children but allow them to make their choices based on their strengths and interests.

“Parents should not assume that because a particular career runs in the family every child should develop interest in it,” she added.

She asked parents to identify the child’s interest, his or her talents and assist him or her to develop it.

Mrs Afful gave the advice when the Bennett Caulley Memorial School at Kaneshie, in Accra, held a Career Day for its pupils to expose them to the various careers available to them to choose from and work seriously at their choices.

The theme for the day was “Career Insight’. The pupils dressed in the attires of the profession they hoped to pursue in future — doctors, nurses, the police, military officers, lawyers and judges.

Mrs Afful advised the children not to choose careers based on what their friends have opted for but rather consider their interests before pursuing any career.

“Don’t let the uniform or the wages of a particular job attract you to choose a career; if you are not sure, go through it with your parents or teachers and they can aid you in finding a career path,” she stressed.

A nurse at the Kaneshie Polyclinic, Mrs Esi Lartey, said students who wanted to venture into the health sector should seek information about what they wanted to do and know what it entailed.

She added that it was important for one to be committed, caring and above all, patient with everyone because they would be dealing with precious human lives.
