She said it was unfortunate that a number of girls in senoir high schools have either exhibited total hatred or absolute dislike for the subject and urged students to get their priorities right and make the nation, the schools and their parents proud by focusing on their studies.

She gave the advice when she addressed the annual Speech and Prize-giving Day of the Accra Girls Senior High School in Accra on the theme “Discipline: A key recipe for academic excellence”.

Discipline

Emeritus Prof. Ardayfio-Schandorf further said academic work went alongside discipline and as such, it was very important for students to uphold the discipline instilled in them by their parents.

“You must ensure that you do not allow the current trends and happenings by your peers to influence you to move away from your core principles of attaining quality education and good moral standards from school,” she stressed.

She commended management of the school for the high level of discipline and high educational standards exhibited over the years and urged them to develop other strategies and intensify efforts to make students follow simple fundamentals of discipline.

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Dr Ahmed Mustapha, commended management, staff, parents and students for working hard to achieve academic excellence, pointing out that their collaborative effort will go a long way to make the school very attractive and competitive in the educational sector.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to the promotion of education with the establishment of educational infrastructure, including dormitories, classroom blocks and other facilities to enhance quality education.

Avoid social vices

He further urged students to avoid all forms of social vices which would impact negatively on their studies and rather engage themselves in serious academic work with a high sense of discipline, determination and respect for all.

The Headmistress of the school, Ms Veronica Akapame, urged parents to collaborate with teachers to develop a strong monitoring system to check  students and help the school to shape the students into future leaders with the right sense of purpose and mission to contribute to the development of the nation.

She commended the old students for serving as role models for the students and always supporting the school alongside the parents teacher association (PTA).
