‘Don’t be discouraged by surroundings’

Students in less-privileged schools have been advised not to look at their immediate surroundings and be daunted but to put in their best as they study, so they can perform very well.

“It is also important to compare yourselves with those from privileged schools as students of equal potentials and match up with them academically and in other social competitions,” a Senior Biomedical Engineer at the National Radiotherapy Centre, Korle Bu, Mr George Boadu, has advised.

Mr Boadu was speaking at the launching of the 25th anniversary celebration of the Jukwa Senior High School at Jukwa in the Central Region.

He stated that most students from less-privileged SHSs dwelt on their surroundings and developed mindsets which made them accept mediocre performances, rather than focusing on their God-given talents and potentials to excel.

Quoting scripture to buttress his point, Mr Boadu asked such students to develop a mindset that would reflect what they wanted to become in future, adding that they should develop their minds like Joshua and Caleb in the Bible story about the 12 spies sent out by Moses to the promised land to explore the land and come with their reports.

"The only thing required of us is to develop a positive mindset and let that ‘can do’ spirit be registered in our subconscious minds. You must know that your destiny is in your own hands and so you should make every effort to unearth your potentials of academic success," he said.

In a brief history about the school, the Headmaster, Mr Ernest Noye, said Jukwa SHS was established in 1991 as a community school with 25 students and three teachers, including a headmaster.

He stated that the school had produced fine and beautiful people who are academicians, among other professionals.

Prof. Paul K. Buah-Bassuah of the Physics Department at the University of Cape Coast encouraged the students to study hard in order to excel in their studies.

The 25th anniversary celebration would be marked next year.
