Child trafficking cases increase

The President of Sewa Foundation Ghana, Mr Jones Owusu Yeboah, has noted that there is a surge in the number of child trafficking cases during the COVID-19 period.

He attributed the major cause of the surge to poverty and explained that parents who couldn’t afford the needs of their children forced them into child labour, prostitution or other illegal means to raise money for the home.

Mr Yeboah made this known during the celebration of the World Day Against Human Trafficking marked on July 30.

The day was also the 10th anniversary of the foundation.

He pointed out that children living in fishing communities were mostly affected because poverty was high in those areas.

He, therefore, appealed to the government to put in place more social intervention programmes such as the free education and the Ghana School Feeding Programmes to keep children safe and reduce child trafficking in the country.
