BECE candidates to access past questions online for free

Final-year junior high students (JHS) students who are preparing for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) will soon be able to access video recordings of consultants answering past questions free of charge.

This followed a partnership between a private consulting firm, MNG Consult and the Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL) to equip JHS students, especially those preparing for the BECE, with the critical skills needed to write and pass the exam successfully.

The partnership allows teachers and consultants from MNG Consult to coach students on how to answer past questions in the four core subjects taught at the JHS.

The lessons will be titled: ‘No question unanswered. 'They will then be recorded and uploaded onto the digital platforms of the GCGL, including the Facebook pages and the YouTube channel of the Daily Graphic and the Junior Graphic, the Graphic NewsPlus and the Graphic Online, for students to access for free.

Subjects covered
The past questions to be tackled are from 2002 to 2019 and will cover Mathematics, English Language, Social Studies and General Science.

The uploading of the videos and their availability to students is due to begin this July and will run till August. Within the period, the GCGL, which publishes the Junior Graphic, the Daily Graphic and four other newspapers, will make available 52 episodes of the 'No question unanswered' to students.

Each episode is about 25 minutes long and feature answers to the past questions, what examiners expect from students and how to attempt and earn marks for questions one may not know or remember the answers, among others.

Meeting
The partnership and its usefulness to students came to light in Accra when the management of MNG Consult met the Editor of the Daily Graphic, Mr Kobby Asmah, and the Director of Marketing of the GCGL, Mr Franklin Sowa. MNG Consult was represented by its Chief Executive Officer, Mr Yaw Boakye, and its Director of Business Development and Marketing, Mr Michael Gyang.

The two sides had signed an agreement to that effect a month ago.

Mr Asmah said the GCGL was a “willing partner” in things that would bring accelerated development to the country. As a result, he said, it decided to partner MNG Consult to deliver the project after satisfying itself that the project was useful for the personal development of students and the nation as a whole.

Mr Asmah said the company was convinced that the initiative would help empower JHS students with knowledge relevant to the successful writing of the BECE.

He explained that while the GCGL supported the project, it would ensure that the information to be provided was authentic and had quality, in line with the company’s hallmark.

He said beyond the videos that would be uploaded onto the Graphic digital platforms, the GCGL would find innovative ways to get parents to supervise their children in the learning process.

The Daily Graphic Editor said one of the ways to do that was to publish questions in the Daily Graphic for students to answer them with guidance from their parents as a way of testing their learning skills.

Explainer videos
For his part, Mr Sowa said the GCGL was hopeful that the partnership on the explainer videos on past questions for JHS students would be the beginning of more projects between the two firms in the future.

Key tit-bits
Mr Gyang of the MNG Consult said the project was aimed at giving students key titbits on answering BECE questions.

He said studies had shown that some brilliant students failed examinations sometimes because they lacked question-answering skills.“So the intention is to let students know what examiners expect of them in exams,” he said.
