3,994 BECE candidates make history with unprecedented raw scores
An analysis of this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) indicates that there was an exceptional performance in the total raw scores of some candidates.

With a total score of 600 being the maximum raw score in six subjects; four core subjects (English, Maths, Science and Social Studies) plus two best subjects), 3,994 candidates scored more than 500, which has never happened in the history of the BECE.
Consequently, the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) ,” Mr Jacob Kor, has commended the candidates and all teachers for their hard work which has brought about the drastic improvement in students’ performance at the 2016 BECE.
He said there was the possibility of a keen contest for placements in the well-endowed schools because of the huge number of candidates whose raw scores were between 500 and 600.
A total of 461,013 candidates wrote this year’s BECE at 1,598 centres.
The Ashanti Region again presented the highest number of 91,349 candidates, comprising 46,931 males and 44,418 females.
The Greater Accra Region follows the Ashanti Region with 81,920 candidates; 39,624 males and 42,296 females. Central Region has the third highest of 48,949 candidates (25,424 males and 23,525 females).
The Western Region has 45,979 candidates (24,283 males and 21,696 females); Eastern Region, 44,028 candidates (23,383 males and 20,645 females) and the Brong Ahafo Region, 42,659 candidates (22,716 males and 19,943 females).
The rest are: Northern Region, 39,916 candidates (22,489 males and 17,427 females); Volta Region, 32,979 candidates (18,205 males and 14,774 females); Upper East Region, 20,713 candidates (10,409 males and 10,304 females) and the Upper West Region, 12,521 candidates (6,499 males and 6,022 females).
