The apparent terror attack in Tunis sent people running for their lives in the street

A female suicide bomber blew herself up in the centre of Tunisia's capital, killing at least one police officer and sparking panic in the street.

Local reports say a woman wearing a suicide vest blew herself up next to a police van and near a hotel.

The explosion happened in Avenue Habib Bourguiba in Tunis at about 1.50pm local time.

The apparent terror attack sent bystanders running for their lives.

Tunisia has been under a state of emergency since a suicide attack on a police bus in November 2015.

It has been extended a number of times following a spate of terror attacks.
