Norwegian Refugee Council welcomes reported opening of Hodeida Port and Sana’a Airport

The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) has welcomed the reported reopening of the Hodeida Port and Sana’a Airport for humanitarian supplies.

The NRC says while the action for humanitarian aid represents a glimmer of hope in the countdown towards famine in Yemen, it is still a minor and insufficient concession within a blockade that is causing the suffering of millions of Yemeni people.

"The reported reopening by the Saudi-led Coalition of Hodeida Port and Sana’a Airport for humanitarian aid is a glimmer of hope in the countdown towards famine in Yemen. The proposed reopening to humanitarian supplies is a step in the right direction, but represents a minor and insufficient concession within a blockade that is causing the suffering of millions of Yemeni people.

A statement issued by the NRC´s country director in Yemen, Mutasim Hamdan said the Council welcomes every opportunity to enable the movement of urgently needed aid through what is otherwise an impenetrable blockade on Yemen’s most critical ports, however further restrictions need to give.

“We appeal to the Saudi-led Coalition to lift the restrictions entirely and immediately. Millions of Yemenis need urgent access to lifesaving food, fuel and medicines than can be delivered by humanitarian agencies ready to assist if allowed.”

The statement said reopening the Hodeida Port and Sana’a Airport to enable the flow of commercial supplies is imperative to the survival of millions of Yemeni people, and called on Ansar Allah authorities in Yemen’s north to facilitate unhindered access to people in need.
