Awen Gwyneth Jenkins is the first female born into the Jenkins family in Carmarthenshire since 1909.

The family, who live at Tycroes near Ammanford, said they only discovered just how rare the birth of a girl was after digging into their family tree.

"It was a bit of shock," admitted Awen's father, Emyr, who is also dad to Awen's older brother, Micah, two.

"As soon as she was born really, we started talking about it. We realised then after looking into family history and that kind of thing that she is the first baby [girl] in a 103-years."

Awen was born in Singleton hospital in Swansea just over a week ago, weighing in at 8lb 7oz (3.8kg).

'Beautiful'

"She is absolutely fantastic. She sleeps almost through the night. She's doing really well - better than her brother was," said her father.

Grandfather Howell Jenkins said he had known that the last woman in his family had been his aunt, Sara Olwen Jenkins, who was born in October 1909.

"Since then, my father, his brothers, have had boys, we've had boys, and of course now, my son has had a little girl," he said.

"The wife and myself are chuffed - she's a beautiful little girl. We are absolutely delighted." - BBC
