President Mahama calls for hard work in Africa

President John Dramani Mahama has urged African countries to work hard to save themselves from poverty, ignorance and diseases instead of expecting “manna from heaven”. He further asked for unity and cooperation among African countries in order to create the necessary environment for development.

Speaking at the state luncheon in his honour in Nairobi during a three-day state visit to Kenya last Saturday, President Mahama said, “Let us all remember that it is through our effort, individual and collectively, that our countries thrive.”

“It is through our unity, our togetherness that our beloved Africa will continue to claim and enjoy freedom, prosperity and the promise of an abundant future,” he added.

Better Future

Responding to a toast proposed by President Uhuru Kenyatta, President Mahama recalled the long-standing relationship between Ghana and Kenya and underscored the need for them to continue to build on it for a better future.

“We stand as collaborators, Presidents of two nations on the world stage, moving steadily into middle-income status, and its our duty to work towards the greater good of our peoples and our continent,” he said.

President Mahama also pointed out the need for the two countries to work collectively to enhance trade and economic activities, commitment to peace and the growth of the entire continent, especially terrorism and war.

“I wish to also urge that we continue to put our people first in the implementation of this constitution and of all other decisions that stand in the interest of justice and peace and the continued freedom of this continent,” he said.
