When we put down our pens

Last Saturday, staff of the Graphic Communications Group Limited decided to contribute their quota towards ameliorating the impact of the Accra floods on residents of Adabraka. The cleanup was settled upon because we considered the choked gutters the root cause of the flooding.

The statement that “seeing is believing” was given meaning as we observed at first-hand choked gutters. The materials that had blocked the gutters were made up mainly of used plastic bottles, take-away boxes and other plastic material. But our nearly five hours of communal service could not yield the desired impact since a restaurant sits directly on the main gutter. We could see the two openings on both sides of the structure but there was little we could do to clear the debris and free the flow of water.

We listened to the moaning of some residents and the hopelessness of their plight. We understood that countless complaints had been made to the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, in vain. We only
