Destroyed water body in Ghana

Let’s protect our water bodies

It is often said that water is life because it has no substitute.  Since water is basic to man’s very existence, it is required that we treat our water bodies with utmost care.

Nevertheless, it is sad to note how some people take things for granted and treat water bodies in this country anyhow. People intentionally throw rubbish into rivers and onto our beaches, while others defecate into water bodies and use poisonous chemicals for fishing.

Various economic activities such as illegal mining “Galamsey” and farming near river banks, construction of buildings, felling of trees and many others contribute to the destruction of our water bodies.

The question is: “For how long are we going to sit down as a nation and allow our environment to be subjected to such destructive activities?

Every year, the various ministries responsible for the environment and water bodies such as the Ministry of Environment Science, Technology and Innovation, the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources join the United Nations Organisation to celebrate special days set aside to create awareness of the need to save the environment.

I doubt whether our dear country is benefitting from such celebrations. Apart from organising seminars and workshops where fantastic lengthy speeches are delivered, no practical activities are planned to halt the excessive degradation of the environment.

The laws on illegal mining activities must be strictly enforced by organising periodic police or army swoops on recalcitrant miners.

Trees must be planted along river banks while those who engage in deforestation activities are made to face the full rigours of the law.

Settlements near river banks must be cleared to avoid the contamination of drinking water.

We must be serious about the state of our environment, especially our water bodies, since water is not infinite.
