Ghana Post observes 2022 World Post Day
Today is World Post Day (WPD), marked to create awareness of the role of the postal sector in people’s lives and towards the promotion of businesses every day.
Slated on the anniversary of the establishment of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) on October 9, 1874, the day also highlights the contributions of the postal sector to the socio-economic development of countries.

Ghana Post, the Designated Operator (DO) for all postal services in the country and a member of the UPU, joins other DOs to commemorate the day with a couple of activities intended to whip up the interest of both internal and external customers.
Ghana, represented by Ghana Post, was elected as a member of the UPU’s Council of Administration (CA) in August last year in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, for a tenure spanning 2021 to 2025.
Ghana Post as a national DO is, therefore, the lead organisation and implementer of all international postal treaties, conventions, rules and regulations which are regularly revised at Council meetings and Congresses.
Post Forest
The theme for this year’s WPD is "Post for Planet". The UPU Director-General, Masahiko Metoki, has intimated that the Post could no longer ignore the climate emergency.
In light of this, Ghana Post is embarking on an innovative drive to cultivate, nurture and grow what is referred to as "Post Forest" in all 16 regions of Ghana.
The locations of the Post Forests will be well guarded by the various communities in a bid to help correct part of the present negative climatic conditions nationwide.
The initiative follows drastic changes in the environment, which are beginning to impact daily lives and livelihoods.
The scientific consensus is clear and without a doubt that human activities are driving climate change. There is a need, therefore, for urgent action by international organisations, governments and civil societies.
As a global player in the delivery of goods and essential services, the Post is in a prime position to influence a change in the entire supply chain.
This battle must be won collectively by all. Real action requires real investment which shall pay dividends in the future but the future begins now.
The UPU has urged all DOs to fall back on the spirit of innovation that held members together through COVID-19 pandemic to reduce the degradation of our environment.
Innovations
Ghana Post, since 2017, has set in motion some innovative processes to bring comfort and joy to its customers; a journey it promises to uphold by constantly reviewing its processes and programmes to meet customer expectations.
Despite competition and challenges from other industry players, Ghana Post is poised on the path of innovation.
Some of our recent changes sit with our EMS services, 24-hour services within the southern sector of Ghana, delivering to doorstep digitally addressed items, nationwide haulage services and recently launched Scuttle Box Services.
The company will soon launch the Home Delivery Service (HDS) where family and friends wishing to send home some household or domestic stuff can aggregate them at home to be shipped for them and delivered to the doorstep of the client by a Ghana Post van.

Umbrella body
The UPU is the umbrella organisation for postal affairs and a specialised agency of the United Nations (UN). The present members are 192 postal administrations worldwide.
It was established in 1874 with headquarters in Berne, Switzerland and is the second oldest international organisation in the world.

The UPU remains the primary forum for cooperation among postal sector players. Thus, fulfilling advisory, mediation and liaison role and also providing technical assistance where needed.
This body sets the rules for international mail exchanges and makes recommendations to stimulate growth in mail, parcel and financial services volumes and improve the quality of service for customers.
