People and Places: Ridge Hospital

For many Ghanaians, the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, better known as Ridge Hospital, is a place associated with healing, hope and second chances.

But beyond its reputation as one of the country's leading healthcare institutions lies a remarkable story of transformation spanning almost a century.

Perched on the serene Ridge enclave in the heart of Accra, the hospital has watched the capital city grow from a modest colonial town into a bustling metropolis.

Established around 1928 as a hospital for European expatriates during the colonial era, the facility became a district hospital after Ghana attained independence in 1957 and was designated the Ridge Regional Hospital in 1997.

In 2013, work began on a major redevelopment project to transform the ageing hospital into a modern specialist facility.

The first phase was completed and inaugurated in 2016, with the new 420-bed Greater Accra Regional Hospital becoming fully operational in May 2017.

A planned second phase is expected to further expand the hospital's capacity to about 620 beds.

Today, visitors are welcomed by an imposing ultra-modern structure that blends functionality with contemporary architecture.

Wide access roads, landscaped gardens, spacious walkways and neatly arranged buildings create an atmosphere that is calm and reassuring, quite different from the crowded image many associate with public hospitals.

The redevelopment of the hospital has transformed it into a state-of-the-art medical facility with specialist services, modern operating theatres, diagnostic units and emergency care designed to meet the growing healthcare needs of the Greater Accra Region and beyond. Sustainability also featured prominently in its design, incorporating natural lighting, energy-efficient systems and environmentally conscious features.

Although its primary mission is healthcare, the hospital has become a landmark in Accra.

Thousands pass through its gates daily—not only patients and healthcare professionals, but also students, researchers and visitors who come to appreciate one of Ghana's most significant public institutions.

Its strategic location, close to Independence Avenue, the Jubilee House and other national landmarks, places it at the centre of the capital's administrative landscape. Yet within its walls, the atmosphere is one of compassion, professionalism and service.

The Greater Accra Regional Hospital is more than bricks, concrete and sophisticated medical equipment.

It is a symbol of Ghana's commitment to improving healthcare while preserving a legacy that has served generations.

In every ward, corridor and consulting room, stories of resilience, recovery and renewed hope continue to unfold, making Ridge Hospital not only a place of healing but also an enduring landmark in the story of Accra.
