Last week I conducted a panoramic survey of our governments from the First to the present Fourth republics and concluded that we are the beneficiaries of lessons learnt in the protection and preservation of democratic governments.
Some did not take my characterisations very well and vehemently argued with me about the what ifs of history. What ifs are very fruitful and enlightening routes of inquiry and in the formulation of opinions, but, essentially, they are not what happened and thus cannot be forced into reality by relying on them.
This week marks the 43rd anniversary of the demise of the Second Republic and the inauguration of the second military regime of the late General Ignatius Kutu Acheampong, whose coup was on January 13, 1972.
