Donald Trump
Donald Trump

An interesting reaction from Trump country!

This column today would be devoted to just sharing with my readers a series of responses exchanged between a reader and my good self in reaction to my last epistle.

As I write today, I do not know if my correspondent is based in Ghana here or not. But she is certainly an American who reveals a lot through her writing, the idiom of American politics that Ghanaians would immediately recognise as similar to ours in some respects, and also rather disturbingly, a comment or two which expose her racialist thinking on issues.

In addition, the very fact of our communication reveals the power of the Internet and the social media it has spawned.

The quotation from Henry Louis Mencken at the top of this column today encapsulates the tenor of my exchanges with my American reader and appeals to me on more than this level. The ‘’Sage of Baltimore’’ as he was known when alive, was a famous journalist and scholar of American English. My personal association with Baltimore makes him a special favourite of mine. As a former student of American history, I do recognise that Mencken was a controversial character in life and even up to today.

The exchanges

My American reader is Kathleen Gibbs, KG for short here in this narration and CE refers of course to me.

‘’KG: Subject: "Opinion: Is there too much confusion..."

Your opinion re: President Trump is shaded [sic: shared] by the lying media.  On three occasions, President Trump publicly denounced and condemned the white supremacists ...

Only the lying media would refer to them as "his" ...

Wake up! IGH, Kathleen

CE:  Sorry, I am not a Trump dupe. I went to school in America and he is one modern politician who doesn't even bother with coded language. He is a total disgrace to decency, morality, civilisation and the equality of all men and women.

KG: So you drank the Kool Aid....he is stirring up the scum in Washington and they don't like it one bit. They can't believe they didn't control the election like they thought they could.Take another sip.

CE: I don't drink Kool Aid. I am not a dupe. Sorry.

Observe the pushback, the leaks, the lies as entrenched power refuses to go silently into that good night! This is why he was voted in!  And who could possibly vote for Hillary who played politics with Africa's resources (and lives).

CE: I am not a Trump dude I repeat. I didn't think much of Hillary either for your information. Obviously you have a dualistic world view. I don’t. Trump would be the end of American exceptionalism i.e. a beacon of democratic moral leadership. His crude nationalism will consign your country to the backwaters of history.

KG: So are you saying you won't accept money from the US?  After all, you are known by the company you keep...you must be above all that, right? I didn't vote for a pastor. I voted for someone who returned his salary...cannot be bought.  Someone who gave up an exceptional lifestyle to be berated and accused because he has a purpose. Sixty-five million people are standing behind him. Just not the lying media. They've been bought and everyone knows it.

But then it doesn't matter. I got what I asked for. Living in the US is not the same as being an American.‘’  The end.

When dropping the Mother of all Bombs [MOAB] is considered an achievement, and reveling in the racist aside that I drink Kool Aid, then narcissism is now a fine art for the millions to admire. I think that is a pity.
