‘Thank God For Idiots’ at National Theatre

If you are yet to see the extremely hilarious ‘Thank God For idiots’  play written by  Latif Abubakar and produced  by Globe Productions, then a good time to catch it is at 7.00p.m. on Monday, September 22 when it  runs as part of the month-long Ghana Theatre Festival. 


The drama is the  story of a couple, Mr and Mrs Kpush who do not see eye to eye on anything though they live together. 

Mrs  Kpush, also referred to as Lady Pink, anxiously wants her husband to die to enable her possess the property he  inherited from his late brother. 

When her plans to get him dead fail, she tries  the divorce route in order to at least get part of the property but her husband wouldn’t divorce her. 

One night while caught up in one of their regular heated arguments, someone barges into their living room and they both go into hiding, thinking it is the ghost of Mr Kpush’s late brother. 

The uninvited ‘visitor’, turns out to be Apisco, their house boy. He has gained a lot of  ‘experience and knowledge’ from the variety of people he has worked for so what does he tell  the couple who has all along seen him as just another idiot in their house?

Abubakar and his Globe Production’s fifth venture into the world of stage plays. The other productions are ‘Romantic Nonsense’, ‘You May Kiss The Corpse’, ‘Gallery of Comedies’ and ‘The Second Return of Kwame Nkrumah’.

Abubakar describes ‘Thank God for Idiots’ as ‘a commonsense-filled satirical piece’ but would audiences share the same view? 

The play will be on again at the National Theatre on Saturday, September 28. 

Other plays scheduled to run at the National Theatre as part of the Ghana Theatre Festival which ends on October 4 include ‘Fired Annointing’ (September 23), ‘Marriage of Anansewa’ ( September 24), ‘Mummies Dimples and Pimples’ (September 26), ‘Women Cry, Men Run’ (September 27) and ‘The Legend of Aku Sika’ ( October 2).
