Ofie and Villy light up Piano Bar

They are singers with contrasting styles but Ofie Kodjoe’s jazz and blues and Villy’s  high-octane Afro-beat  managed to  complement each other for the benefit of music  enthusiasts last Friday, at the Piano Bar, Teshie-Nungua Estates in Accra.

The programme for the night was dubbed Rhythms For Your Heart and both artistes were backed by the Extreme Volumes band.

While Ofie delicately warmed her way into the hearts of the audience with some intricate but smooth stuff, Villy was a symbol of energy as he jumped around and danced in a manner reminiscent of Fela and Femi Kuti.

The common thing about what both artistes presented was the passion to convey socially-relevant messages through their songs.

Ofie dedicated a piece to the 200 abducted girls in Nigeria and continually reminded everyone to show love at all times.

Villy and the Extreme Volumes band are from Nigeria and it was obvious where the influence on what they do comes from.

Afro-beat is a big export commodity from Nigeria and Villy blew everyone away with his energetic showmanship and politically-charged songs.

The Piano Bar has been around only since last Christmas but it is already making a mark as a venue for serious, mature music.

Artistes that have already performed there include Bessa Simons, Paapa Yankson, Pat Thomas, Gyedu Blay-Ambolley and Daasebre Gyamenah.

“Our aim is to bring good stuff to clients and add some class to the live music scene in the nation’s capital,” says Solomon Okine, proprietor of the Piano Bar.

If what it has shown over the last seven months is anything to go by, then more of the country’s brightest music stars should be expected in the Piano Bar in the coming weeks and months.

It will be the turn of singer Elivava and the Hewale Sounds at the Piano Bar tomorrow, August 8.
