Iconic architecture on show at National Museum

Buildings and structures with iconic architectural designs abound across the country and drawings and photographs of some of those edifices will go on show from December 20 at the National Museum in Accra.

Dubbed the ‘The Architectural Heritage of Ghana’, the three-month exhibition is expected to fascinate visitors with valuable information relating to areas such as architectural style, construction technology, aesthetic value and how architecture has contributed to our national development agenda.

“I’m sure visitors to the exhibition will experience something unique and at the same time something familiar,” said Mr Kwame Sowu Jnr, Acting Chairman of the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board.

The exhibition forms part of preparation for the official re-opening of the National Museum gallery which was closed in 2015 for refurbishment.

One of the valuable exhibits to be shown is a photograph of Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, presenting the model of the National Museum, based on drawings by Arc. Dott. Franco Minissi, to the then British Secretary of State for the Commonwealth, Mr Arthur Bottomley.

There will be talks in the course of the exhibition by experts including Arch. Osei Kwame Agyemang, Arch. Gustav J. Narh Dometey and Arch. Gifty Adigvom.
The opening of the exhibition is free and open to the public.

Young Ghanaian visual artists, including  Daniel A. Kukubor and Isshaq Ismail, will have some of their works on sale at the opening ceremony.

The ‘Architectural Heritage of Ghana’ exhibition has been developed by the National Museum’s temporary exhibition team led by Akosua Saah Buckman, in collaboration with Arch. Osei Kwame Agyemang and Kate Tamakloe of Deo Gratias Photo Studio in Accra. It will remain open till March 20, 2019.

Previous major exhibitions of the National Museum include ‘South Meets West’ (1999), ‘The Black Music Odyssey’ (2012), ‘The SHAW Exhibition’ (2013) and ‘Painting Our Heritage’ (2014)
