The Minister of Communications, Information and Media Relations, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, has said the government is committed to ensuring that there is  local content in television programmes to promote the cultural and moral values of the country.

He explained that 70 per cent of the programmes shown on television would be of local content while 30 per cent would be foreign.

Dr Boamah made the remarks in a speech read on his behalf at the launch of the Television Awards Ghana Festival (TAGF) held on Friday in Accra.

The event,  jointly organised by the Ministry of Communications, Information and Media Relations, National Media  Commission, National Communications Authority and the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association, seeks to award the television stations that portray the cultural values of the country .

Cultural values abandoned

Many television stations, Dr Boamah stated, had abandoned programmes with local content  and were projecting foreign cultures which, according to him, had the tendency to have a negative impact on the society.

For that reason, he said, there was the need to establish a digital terrestrial transmission (DTT) that would help  Ghanaians switch to a transmission that projects local programmes.

The awards

The Project Manager of TAGF,  Mr Gideon Oyiadzo Jingles, said the TAGF was established to conduct structured annual awards for deserving television stations, programmes, production crew and individuals in the industry.

There will be three main categories of awards.  They are: Industry awards which will comprise 12 categories; the Primetime awards, 17 categories and Popular awards which will be by nomination by the public.

The Chairman of the Board of Trustees  of the TAGF,  Mr Kofi Middleton-Mends, said the festival would be an avenue that would project the pride of the African culture.

He, therefore, urged stakeholders to support the initiative.
