"We underestimated interest in Avengers: Endgame" - Silverbird Cinema apologises

The Management of the Silverbird Cinemas Ghana has apologised for a near-stampede that marred the screening of Avengers: Endgame, an American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics superhero team the Avengers.

Silverbird which runs the Silverbird Cinemas at the Accra Mall came under fire from social media users after some movie-goers were left trying to push their way through crowds to catch a glimpse of the movie on Friday.

The situation was not aided by the heat at the entrance of the cinemas.

Amateur footage from the scene, showed hundreds of patrons struggling to move to the front of queues leading to the entrance of the cinema halls.

A Twitter user @___daenerys__ suggested that Silverbird sold more tickets than could fit in the cinema.

However, Silverbird in a statement condoling with customers who got injured said they underestimated the importance of the movie to Marvel fans in Ghana.

"On Friday however, we got overwhelmed by the crowd and the measures we put In place to control them proved futile, because of the magnitude of people that trooped in to see the movie," the statement said

"The sad incident that happened on the staircase was a result of us, underestimating what this movie means to the die-hard Marvel fans of our beloved country".

Endgame global ticket sales

Avengers: Endgame made box office history by taking a record-breaking $1.2bn (£929m) in global ticket sales in its opening run.

The Disney blockbuster has become the fastest film ever to break the $1bn barrier, doing so in just five days.

Endgame is the 22nd offering in the Marvel Studios superhero franchise.
