Unforgiven from Uncle Ebo
It is now obvious, Uncle Ebo Whyte did not mince words when he promised to deliver a play every quarter of the year six years ago when he started to whip up appetite for theatre again in Ghana.

At the beginning of this year, it was Make Me A Woman. This was followed by Games Men Play, and last Thursday at the National Theatre, Uncle Ebo Whyte and his Roverman team premiered his third play Unforgiven which incidentally is his 24th play in six years.
Unforgiven will be shown to the public at the National Theatre today, August 30 and tomorrow. There will be a repeat on September 6 and 7.
Like most of Uncle Ebo Whyte’s productions, he manages to highlight important societal issues whiles keeping the audience entertained and glued to the edge of their seats and Unforgiven is no different.
In Unforgiven, Uncle Ebo explores the messages of jealousy, love, family, self-confidence and the determination to succeed. The play follows the Boye family as well as provides insight into what goes on behind the scenes of the production of a play.
As the play goes on, we see Mrs Yaa Boye struggling with issues of self-confidence brought about mainly by her husband, Mr John Boye who constantly looks down on her although she remains devoted to him.
Mrs Boye, is encouraged by her daughter, Malaika, to take part in an audition for a play. She grabs the lead role in Wofa Charles, a renowned playright’s play. Her husband and cousin Blessing do all they can to stop her but she finds her voice one day and goes for what she wants.
As the story unfolds, the facts are laid bare with a twist in the story and the audience finally gets to know why the play is fittingly titled, Unforgiven.
Although the lead cast performed admirably on the night, it was the antics of characters such as Foster Arab Mensah, the Nobel Prize winning scientist; OC, with his catch phrase of “solid” and Blessing who had the audience in stitches.
The play started on an upbeat note and the cast throughout the entire production maintained this energy. The cast delivered their lines to perfection and in no time at all, they had the audience hanging on to their every word.
The play was interspersed with a number of popular foreign and local songs sung by the characters and backed by the Jasper band. As usual, this helped to advance the story by revealing the characters moods and personality.
