Theatre Day celebrates Concert Party

“In line with the general theme and our regular provision of a platform and engagement with Ghanaian comedy through the popular Concert Party productions, the National Theatre is happy to make the Concert Party genre the centre of this year’s celebration of International Theatre Day,” a statement from the National Theatre said. 

It added that there will be speeches and performances which would highlight the work of theatre in all aspects of performances, but the focus will be on Concert Party  performances by outstanding Ghanaian comedians.

There will also be performances by the resident groups of the National Theatre and a special appearance by Meneva Sodevi, a student from Christian Methodist Senior High School in Accra who will launch her debut  collection of  songs on compact disc at the programme which starts  at 2:30pm.

Meanwhile, as part of activities to mark its 20th anniversary celebration, the National Theatre, in collaboration with Yaw’s House Productions, would present an Easter  play titled  Miraculous: That Boy Jesus.

Slated for showing each day on March 30,  March 31 and April 1, the play tells the story of a widow whose two sons  come home to tell her  that they do not want to be fishermen anymore but rather  want to follow somebody else  and become fishers of men.

 The mother is not happy about why her sons have left their good reliable jobs to follow “that boy Jesus!”

The  play is written and directed by Yaw Asiyama, a United Kingdom-based Ghanaian playwright.  Actors in the production include Mawuli Semevo, Edinam Atatsi, Robert Kodua, Eldad Kumah, Joycelyn Doglokuma, Ben Kwadey, Ato Ghartey, Vera Bonney and Agnes Panfred.
