Listening to her songs called Fine Boy and My Time and considering her good looks as well can easily lead one to conclude that Perpetual Ama Yankey, who prefers to be called simply Miss Yankey, is a fine girl whose time has arrived to get noticed.
Fine Boy and My Time are two of the five singles Miss Yankey has finished recording at the Stars Tree Studio at Abossey Okai in Accra.
The five songs have her grooving along to Azonto beat, rapping over some tight R&B - dancehall fused vibes and cooing ecstatically to a racy techno rhythm.
Miss Yankey, who initially got into showbiz as a dancer for Slim Busterr, says the varied approaches to her songs are just to announce her as a versatile vocal performer in addition to her already-honed abilities with choreography and dance.
“I’m a total entertainer. The songs are just to show how I can connect to everyone everywhere through the rhythms that move me,” she says.
The Azonto beat obviously moves her and she adequately demonstrates that with Gede Gede featuring Castro and Fine Boy featuring Wiper. The featured acts appear to know the game well and they beautifully contrast her sweet, soft touch with their robust interjections.
Controversial man of the moment, Shatta ‘Bandana’ Wale features on My Time. He hits home with an energetic Jamaican patois-style that adds real punch to the song.
Nightmare is Miss Yankey alone tackling a love theme with a strong techno feel. She says she likes the piece because it was brewed from personal experience
“I see aspects of my love life roll out in front of me whenever I perform Nightmare,” Miss Yankey points out.
The Stay In My Bed song features Obofour and it is contemporary R&B stuff.
Miss Yankey started singing when Fresh Prince of 4X4 fame heard and encouraged her to add singing to her dancing. He recorded her doing a sort of country piece and she says hearing her voice over and over again on that song emboldened her to keep on singing.
She does not seem scared of the current situation with so many other young female singers all jostling for attention. Regarding herself as cut out more for live performances, Miss Yankey is confident she can ride on the back of that to stand out from the rest.
The flexibility shown on her five catchy singles point to a young lady ready to put in whatever it takes to get the attention she wants. She can climb high if she stays focused.
