Ghanaian highlife musician Kumi Guitar has exhorted up-and-coming artistes against combining highlife music with foreign beats in an effort to make it sound more modern.

He argues that the Highlife genre which takes its root from Ghana has its original path and any attempts to change to fit contemporary sounds would be damaging to the genre's origin.

Kumi Guitar, born Nana Yaw Kumi in a recent interview with Graphic Showbiz voiced concern about how certain up-and-coming acts were creating their own genre and dubbing it "Afrobeats Highlife," noting that this would be disastrous for Ghana's highlife music.

“What we are hearing lately is what some artistes call Afrobeats Highlife and it’s even laughable. What are we trying to do to our highlife genre? We can’t take such move. No!

“If we do, in the near future, the next generation may not even know anything about the real Ghanaian highlife. Our pacesetters defined highlife well and we must do all we can to preserve it for future generations”, he added.
