LONDON-based Ghanaian hiplife artiste Soul Tee has added a fifth to his list of love album releases with the latest coming under the title Oniee. The 34 year old artiste whose real name is Jodi Osei Kwadwo says he released the album to help people say ‘I love you’ in a musical way.
Oniee which means ‘That’s him’ in Akan, is a song that expresses admiration for people who understand what marriage really means. The album’s ten songs switch from hiplife to highlife, making use of a varied number of backing vocalists including Terry Bonchaka, TH4 Kwages and She. It also makes use of old time songs such as K. Gyasi’s Obaa Baako which has been modified with a new beat and fresh lyrics.
Obaa Baako is a song of woe about women who desert their spouses, after sacrifices are made for them. Nyan Me (Wake me up) is a rather slow-tempo love song done in the highlife vein that urges partners not to hesitate to wake each other up from sleep whenever they need them. Terry Bonchaka does very well on this song as he sings “.... pamper me, tickle me and show me that you are a woman...”
Wifey is Soul Tee’s message to husbands to cherish their wives. The song, done in pop music style, seems to buttress his claim that his music has influences of the versatility of the King of Pop, Michael Jackson. Nye Seyia Na Meye is a song of encouragement to the destitute that one day all would be well, with lyrics such as “...nobody knows the beginnings of a great man.. your star would shine one of these days....”.
Other songs on the album are Sie Sie Wakoma (Prepare your heart) Esi Me Tiri Mu (Your love gets into my head), Mafe Me Do (I’ve missed my love) and the instrumental version of Oniee.
