Selling sex not easy - Badgirl Nafisah

The concept of sex selling is one that has stayed true in the entertainment industry across the globe. It is, therefore, not out of place for people to think the easiest way to break into the music industry is to adopt a sexy approach.

Some may go about it tastefully, while others can go to the extreme all to get attention but singer Badgirl Nafisah says selling sex is not as easy as people make it seem.

According to her, an artiste may not be taken seriously for using only that means to try to get to the top. “Just like others, when I was entering the music scene, I also thought using nudity will be my escape route to the top, that it will make things easy for me but little did I know that it was going to be much tougher.

“For example, when you look at my videos, they have a lot of sexually explicit scenes so it is difficult to get them played on television stations. And radio stations also don’t want to play because of the lyrics of the songs. These platforms also help in promoting my works but they won’t because of the explicit content and videos.

“One of the things that nudity does is that, you become known on social media but not on mainstream platforms but the dream is to be known in the mainstream but because I have sold myself in that manner, it hinders me from getting higher. It is not easy at all.

“There are times I go out and I hear people sing my songs yet they do not know me and I sometimes go like, ‘I am the one who sang the song you are singing.’ On Tik Tok for instance, some of the words in my songs are used by people for their videos but they do not know who sang it. You can’t blame them, I am sure if I was on both social media and mainstream, I will be more popular than this.”

Another concern Badgirl Nafisah touched on was her manager’s lack of financial muscle. “I have a manager but he is not financially fit so we are not able to take my craft to the level that we want and I am also not there yet financially so it’s a bit of a struggle but I hope we will get there.”

When asked if these challenges she is encountering will make her stop writing risque lyrics, Badgirl Nafisah said no. “There are people who love what I do and others who do not so currently, my team is working on producing content that will be appreciated by all consumers.”

Due to the image she has portrayed of herself, it is natural that she will have men trying to get her attention and talking about how she deals with them, Badgirl Nafisah said they were not a problem at all.

“It is not a problem, I handle them very well. Truth is, it is not every man who comes your way who is in for the wrong reasons. There are good ones and so you have to be careful when dealing with them, there are some who come your way purposely to help you and I appreciate those people a lot.”

The Wokoti singer also hinted that her fans should expect a collaboration with either Sista Afia or Efya in the coming months.

“The next one I want to drop, I’m looking at an all-girl thing and I don’t see any other person fit for the song like these two acts. Again, these are the two people I am close to in the industry so it will be easy to speak to them and have them on my song.”

Speaking on how her family feels about the kind of artiste she is, she said, they have no role to play. “They cannot do anything, I am my own woman, I grew up on the streets and again I don’t care what anyone thinks or says about me.”
