GHANAIAN festivals are breathtaking to witness, as they come with all the splendour that will grab your attention in just a wink.

They are just colourful, beautiful and interesting, showcasing different traditional costumes, dances, traditions and sometimes activities shrouded in mystery.

There are several of these festivals and they are celebrated to commemorate significant events by different tribes in the country. These celebrations bring to light some of the defining traits of the Ghanaian culture.

Festivals such as Ohum, Odwira, Aboakyer, Edina Bakatue, Damba, Kundum, Fetu Afahye, Asafotufiam, Hogbetsotso, Homowo, among others are all marked in specific times of the year and in grand style.

During the course of the festivals, a variety of activities are lined up to mark the celebration on designated days, with, sometimes, special meals, pouring of libation to gods, cleansing of stools, competitions, clean-up exercises, among others.

All these activities are climaxed with a grand durbar of the chiefs and people. This is when the chiefs and queenmothers step out with pomp and pageantry and the people compliment their leaders’ fashion statement in interesting and sometimes special numbers too.

Amid drumming, dancing, firing of muskets by warriors, among others, they parade through the town or village before they assemble for the durbar.
