Veteran Hiplife musician Reggie Rockstone has fired back at fellow musician Slim Buster over public criticism, insisting industry veterans shouldn't engage in public fights.
Reggie expressed disappointment with Slim Buster for dragging him into a public dispute, describing him as a longtime friend with whom he had shared years in the music industry.
“I don’t know why my name is always attached to drama. Slim, you’re my friend from way back. We are seniors in the game, so we shouldn’t take this route,” he stated.
The Hiplife pioneer stressed that musicians who had spent years in the industry should handle disagreements privately, especially when they had a long-standing relationship.
“OGs don’t beef,” he added, asking why Slim Buster chose to criticise him publicly instead of approaching him directly.
The disagreement followed comments by Slim Buster, who claimed that despite knowing Reggie Rockstone for years, he had never been able to sit down with him to discuss music. He also suggested that Reggie was unwilling to meet him.
Slim Buster further challenged the idea that veteran musicians had been forgotten, arguing that he still had the looks and appeal to compete with younger artistes. He also accused Reggie of doing little to support the growth of the Ghanaian music industry.
Reggie, however, rejected the allegation, pointing to his contribution to the development of Hiplife, a genre that blends Ghanaian musical influences with hip-hop and other contemporary sounds.
“You say I haven’t done anything for the industry, but I pioneered Hiplife. You even tapped into it with ‘Masherita’,” he retorted.
He also took issue with Slim Buster’s decision to make the accusations publicly, maintaining that such concerns should have been discussed privately between them.
Addressing the claim that he had refused to collaborate with Slim Buster, Reggie explained that he could not recall the musician contacting him to request a joint project.
He added that a collaboration depended on more than an artiste’s musical ability, as creative chemistry also played a role in deciding whether to work together.
“Your music might be nice, but an artiste will not have the vibe or crave for it. And that’s okay,” he explained.
Reggie further indicated that he would no longer discuss Slim Buster in interviews or at other public engagements, urging his fellow musician to refrain from using public platforms to criticise others.
