When it comes to tourist attraction site, the slave dungeons at Cape Coast and Elmina Castles, Kakum Park and maybe Akosombo Dam easily comes to mind.
There are, however, hundreds more of tourist sites for the eco-minded, gastro-curious, charitably motivated and the adventure-seeking traveler .
As part of the Miss Tourism Ghana Organisation's commitment to highlighting Ghana's hidden tourist treasures, the reigning Club-Miss Tourism Esinam Awunyo, joined the Ankobeahemaa of Abiriw-Akuapem, Nana Kesewa Mintaa II, for a health walk last Saturday to the newly discovered Abiriw Falls.
The Member of Parliament for Abiriw-Akuapem, Dan Botwe, queens, chiefs, parents, teachers, students, children, tourists, media representatives, Miss Tourism Ghana Organisation staff, and Club-Miss Tourism Ghana 2012 runner-up Bernice Amadjei Antwi were all part of the health walk.
Accompanied by a brass band, the journey to Abiriw Falls was an adventure across an unbeaten path. Walkers had to climb, balance with their hands, run and make use of their reflexes as they traversed the trail that led to the final destination: a breathtaking oasis.
Though small in size compared to other major falls in Ghana, the Abiriw Falls is a spectacular discovery in a region also known for its lush Aburi Gardens.
The children rushed headlong into the gentle pool that formed at the base of the falls -- a welcome cooling dip after a 45-minute walk. The Member of Parliament, the queens , and chiefs also posed for photos under the falling water.
The only blight on the beautiful site is the heap of garbage surrounding the environs of the attraction.
"This site has immense potential to be a major tourist attraction and revenue-generator for the people of Abiriw and Ghana as a whole," pointed out Mrs Delphine J. Brew-Hammond, Director of
Events and Operations for the Miss Tourism Organisation.
"We are ready to help the necessary authorities prepare it for serious tourist activity."
Lele Foods, Darling Hair, and Metropolitan Insurance Company sponsored the Miss Tourism Ghana Team on the health walk.
