Despite seeing his promising music career cut short after spending seven years in prison, Ramzy of Stars of the Future fame, says he has not given up on his dream of being an entertainer and is ready for his big comeback.
After coming second in the first edition of Stars of the Future (Irene Logan was the winner) in 2007, Ramzy was on the way up and was set to take part in West African Idol in Nigeria when it all came crashing down with his arrest and subsequent imprisonment for carjacking.
He was given a 10-year sentence but received a presidential pardon leading to his release earlier this year. In an interview with Showbiz on Tuesday, Ramzy, who gave his life to Christ while in prison, disclosed he was on working on a new album, which will be in praise to God.
“I used to do love songs but I believe that God arrested and put me in prison in order for me to do what he required of me. My release from prison is entirely the work of God and there is nothing I can do but to honour him,” he said of the album.
“At this point in my life I am not in music for what I can get but rather for what I can do for God. If I wanted to do music for financial gain I would have come back to secular music like I was doing before,” he said.
Speaking about his experience, Ramzy, full name William Ramzy Amui, said it was only by the Grace of God that he was able to serve his sentence since all of the people he considered friends left him to his fate.
“All my friends abandoned me and I know this was the doing of God because he wanted me to trust in Him completely. My trust in God yielded results because I did not even have to appeal or go through anybody. I was in prison and God said it was time for me to be free and that was it,” he said.
Ramzy who is signed to the Royalty Record Label said his new album will feature some heavyweight Ghanaian gospel artistes including Joe Mettle, Cwesi Oteng, Ohema Mercy and a host of others.
With such a passion for singing, at the Nsawam Prisons where he served his sentence, Ramzy led and sang in the choir.
Ramzy is not alone in the crime to Christ story. Highlife musician, Gemann who shot and killed a taxi driver and was sentenced to life imprisonment, converted in prison and since his release, he has been doing his bit to spread the Word of God.
