Contrary to speculation in some showbiz circles that gospel musician SP Kofi Sarpong doesn’t deserve to be in the Artiste of the Year category at this year’s Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, he believes he has worked hard to earn that nomination.
“Considering the number of performances I have done in the year under review both at corporate events and church events, I really deserve to be in that category. There are some Saturdays that I perform at three or four programmes so you can imagine that it has been a lot of hardwork,” he told Showbiz last Friday.
“We have done our part and it is obvious that people are watching, I will be glad if I win that category but if it goes to any of the other artistes, it’s fine because they have also done their bit, “ he added.
SP Kofi Sarpong has been nominated in four categories namely, Artiste of the Year, Gospel Artiste of the Year, Album of the Year and Gospel Song of the Year and he is optimistic about going home with the Gospel Artiste of the Year and Album of the Year.
On how he felt about his four nominations, SP Kofi Sarpong said, “I feel good and humbled, I am very happy, at least it tells me that my work is being appreciated. We give thanks to God.”
He added that he was generally satisfied with his nominations, “I don’t know how the board goes about their work but I am satisfied, people have called to congratulate me which goes to say that Ghanaians are happy with my nominations.”
Reacting to the elimination of the Gospel Album of the Year category in this year’s awards, SP Kofi Sarpong said it was a big disappointment because it leaves gospel musicians with less categories in the awards, “As I said earlier, I don’t know how the board go about their work but it is difficult to accept that they did not get a gospel album with three hits. gospel songs do very well not only in Accra but throughout the regions,” he said.
He expects the final event to be exciting, “after every event, there are comments and suggestions on what the public thought could have been better so I hope this year’s will be great. They should start on time and whoever deserves an award should go home with an award, I wish everybody the best of luck, ‘ he said.
S P Kofi Sarpong asked his fans to continue supporting him, “they should keep supporting Kofi Sarpong and back me with prayers, they should also keep the votes coming so that victory will be mine. I thank them all.”
