Gospel artistes not creative - Perpetual

In spite of many of her colleagues slamming Charterhouse, organisers of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, for scrapping the Gospel Album of the Year category this year, gospel artiste, Perpetual Didier, has rather hailed the decision.

According to her, the decision is a wake-up call to the gospel music industry which is becoming choked with what she says is “incompetence in creativity”.

The Wontumi Nka Me Nnhye singer told Showbiz last Monday, “This is a good decision because gospel artistes lack creativity. This will make them face the reality and produce good stuff for the public.

“I don’t blame the organisers because we are not bringing out the best and that shouldn’t be encouraged”, she said.

To Perpetual, rather than venting their spleen on the organisers of the VGMA for the “bold decision”, her colleagues should rather thank Charterhouse for alerting them to their weaknesses.

“We can do all genres of music in gospel. The difference between us and the others would be the message but unfortunately, it seems we are all doing the same things. It’s the same instrumentation, style and even delivery. Where is the creativity if we can’t produce something out of the ordinary?” Perpetual queried.

Citing examples to buttress her point, Perpetual said Tagoe Sisters and Daughters of Glorious Jesus inspired the younger generation with their music but unfortunately, not many have been able to follow in their footsteps. “Even the likes of Ohemaa Mercy and Kwaku Gyasi brought some creativity and appeal to the gospel scene. Their songs were so popular that they were played in the night clubs because of the creativity and appeal to people from all backgrounds. Gospel musicians should just accept that we are being very lazy,” she stressed.

Perpetual Didier released her 10 track album, Wontumi Nka Me Nnhye last year. She is currently promoting her latest single, Wahendzi Mmra feat. Nero X.
