Songstress Efya meant it when she admitted at the launch of this year’s Girl Talk concert last month that though she felt the pressure as the new headline act, she had positive energy burning inside her to give off her best and promised patrons nothing but a ‘gingam’ show.
Girl Talk has won the trust of most ladies over the past four years when Becca was the headline artiste and, of course, many ardent followers had doubts if this year’s concert would live up to its billing.
And boy did Efya deliver! The Gingam Too Much artiste performed beyond everyone’s expectation when she hit the stage at the fully packed National Theatre auditorium where this year’s Girl Talk show was held.
At the advertised time of 8:00pm when the show was expected to start, there were just a handful of patrons in the auditorium, pushing the organisers to wait for almost two hours before the event finally kicked off.
The wait was undoubtedly worth it when the all-female Les Femmes band set the tone for the night and got the patrons into a party mood. From old school to contemporary and local hit tunes such as Mansa, Telemo and Atom’s Ye Wo Krom, the band got patrons on their feet throughout their presence on stage.
Their stagecraft and energy no doubt caught the admiration of the audience and that appreciation was translated into a loud applause when the band exited the stage.
At this time, the expectant audience and the gingered up atmosphere needed the presence of Efya, but that was not to be as two young female artistes, Cena and Nana Asantewaa took turns to maintain the heat on the stage with their acts.
It was Efya’s rendition of Obianuju that ushered her onto the stage and the thunderous screams that heralded her presence was an indication that the patrons expected nothing but the best from the four-time VGMA Female Vocalist of the Year.
Clad in a black outfit, her powerful voice echoed through the auditorium as she intermittently expressed her appreciation to her fans for the support she has earned.
Backed by the Afro Harmony band, Efya sent patrons travelling on a journey of some of her well- known songs such as Forgetting Me, The Best In Me, One of Your own, Gingam Too Much, Sexy Sassy Wahala and Cigarette.
Perhaps, the highlight of the night’s event was when she performed her latest song, Jorley, with Sarkodie.
Prior to that, there had been performances with Joey B, Pappy Kojo and EL. She also took patrons down memory lane when she performed Facebook Boys with Itz Tiffany.
There were other acts by dancehall artiste, Episode, Adomaa and Reggie Rockstone who professed his undying love for his wife on stage.
As if all the fun that had gone on already was not enough, television and radio presenter, Afia Schwarzenegger, was also on hand to crack up patrons with her “Dead Goat” comic act. She definitely scored high with her performance.
Other performances from Selly, Ohuofe Patri among others crowned this year’s Girl Talk concert which was compered by Bella Mundi.
A patron who spoke to Showbiz after the show expressed her excitement at Efya’s delivery. “It couldn’t have been any better than this. Initially, I was a bit skeptical about this year’s edition because of Becca’s absence but I think I have been proved wrong. It was definitely a great show. Efya was simply awesome.”
It has been a prominent, well-loved feature on the entertainment calendar in the nation’s capital since 2011 and Girl Talk, now called Savannah Girl talk, organised by the EKB Group, is an all-female audience with performances and pep-talk on a variety of issues by prominent females in the society.
Many patrons at the Savannah Girl Talk show last Friday appreciated the quality of the production that contributed to the highly successful four-hour show.
