Date Rush Reunion: Joan confirms mental illness rumours

THE third season of Date Rush has been one for the books; turning up the controversy, generating a lot of excitement on social media, and bringing a lot of eyeballs to TV3.

And the drama is making its way onto Date Rush Reunion, a three-episode show meant to give participants the opportunity to recap their high and low moments and discuss life after the show.

In the second episode of Date Rush Reunion, one of the contestants confirmed that she indeed has a mental condition like had been speculated.

When she made her appearance on Date Rush, reports flew all over social media that she was mentally unstable and a drug addict.

There were even claims that her parents brought her back to Ghana from the United States over her behavior and that she was laid off from the National Identification Authority (NIA) where she worked because of her mental health challenges.

When Joan appeared on Date Rush Reunion with her partner Williams, host Anita Akuffo asked if she had heard the rumours that she was mentally unstable and she answered in the affirmative and confirming that the reports were true.

“Yes but I’ve never stepped in a plane before. I just talk like this and it’s locally acquired. I have schizophrenia,” she replied.

Schizophrenia according to medicalnewstoday.com, is a challenging brain disorder that often makes it difficult to distinguish between what is real and unreal, to think clearly, manage emotions, relate to others, and function normally. It affects the way a person behaves, thinks, and sees the world.

In a phone interview with a psychologist, Dr. John-Paul on a show, he said schizophrenic patients can be treated and they can have normal lives.

While Joan chose Williams during her time on Date Rush, when they appeared on the reunion show there was some tension between them.

Williams explained that he was not interested in Joan because he thinks she's overly dramatic whiles Joan complained that she was not getting the love and attention she needed from him.
