Chale Wote spirit grabs Accra

The Chale Wote Street Art Festival, organised by Accra Dot Alt, once again proved how popular it has become as large crowds thronged the streets of James Town in Accra last weekend for the finale of the sixth edition.

It was colourful, convivial atmosphere that attracted people from all walks of life, both local and foreign. Stalls sold a variety of items and music boomed from all corners as festivalgoers reveled in the many vibrant art forms an offer.

Everywhere one turned from the old Kingsway building to Light House, there was poetry, live painting sessions, processions, acrobatics, boxing, dance lessons, art installations, fashion parades and other eye catching activities.

Some banks and real estate companies were also on hand and took advantage of the crowd to do business.

Body painting was part of art forms at the event

Theme for this year’s festival was “Spirit Robot’. It was explained by the organisers as “a constellation of art, energy, and passion that signifies our united capacity to create meaningful change in our communities and shift our realities into a more livable world for all.”

That’s quite a mouthful but for the folks who invaded the streets of James Town for the festival, there was nothing complex about staying out to enjoy the fun late into the night at what is obviously the biggest crowd-pulling outdoor entertainment event in the nation’s capital.

The festival grounds were really the place to be for many young people in Accra. Vehicular traffic was heavy between the Tema Station transport terminal towards old Kingsway building direction but people did not appear to mind walking some distance to go and see what was keeping Accra boiling over the weekend.

A tourist, James Walker from London, said last weekend was his third visit to Ghana and he timed it to coincide with the Chale Wote festival.

“I brought two friends along this time around and we all enjoyed ourselves very well. I hope to bring some more people next year. It was a unique, thrilling festival and we loved it,” he stated.

According to festival organisers, more than 200 Ghana-based and international artists participated in this year’s event which took off on Monday 15, August.
