Bukom was all thrills

Last Saturday was a good moment to release stress when April Productions staged its lastest play Bukom at the National Theatre.

The auditorium reverberated with laughter as the cast of Mawuli Semevor, Clemento Suarez, Jeneral Ntatia, Pearl Darkey, Adeline Adjokatse and Chapman Quayson treated patrons to rib-cracking performance throughout the session.

Any theatre lover would appreciate the stage skills of Mawuli Semevor who flawlessly took on the role of Atta Kojo, the lead cast.

Ataa Kojo, an ex-service man and the only Bukom native to be awarded by an European company has five children – Amartey, Karley, Allotey, Foofo and Tsiko.

Atta Kojo interviews the best contractor to build his modern toilet facility

Of the many important projects that beg for his attention, it is the construction of a modern toilet which is a priority to him. He summons a family meeting to announce his intention to his children and tasks them to make monthly contributions towards the project.

Not even the threats from his eldest son, Amartey to use Atta Kojo’s remittances to fund the toilet project would deter the stubborn ex-serviceman to rescind his decision, he was bent on making history as the first family to own a modern toilet facility in Bukom.

Besides, he had plans of inviting Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and government dignitaries to grace the opening of the first modern toilet in Bukom to be built by a proud ex-serviceman.

Apart from the humour, the play which is based on the award winning book by Bill Marshal whose family was present, touched on very important issues including marriage, pre-marital sex, communal living and the Ga culture.

The occasion was also used to celebrate Mawuli Semevor on his 200th play since he started stage plays.

Speaking with Showbiz on the sidelines of the show, Nana Ama Achiaa Prempeh, the director said she was overwhelmed by the sterling performance of the actors who had a short time to rehearse.

She appealed to the public to support the works of playwrights by patronising their works since it could be a useful tool for development.

“There are many young playwrights like myself but the problem is the lack of support for our works. If the public continue to support theatre, then it will grow to become one of the sources of income for the arts and creative sector,” she said.

Apart from Bukom, other productions that have come from April Production are Prison Graduates, Dinner for Promotion and Medicine for Love.

Sponsored by Adehyie Estates ltd, Inn8, Cheers Bissap and Edddys Pizza, Bukom also showed yesterday, Sunday, November 12 at 4pm and 7pm.
