Black Sherif ‘saves’ GH at Soundcity MVP Awards

In January, the names of Black Sherif, Camidoh, Dope Nation and KiDi made the nomination list of this year’s Soundcity MVP Awards and expectations were really high that Ghana would walk shoulder-high at the end of the ceremony.

However, at the end of the night,  Kweku The Traveller hitmaker, Black Sherif was the only Ghanaian to pick an award—HipHop Act of the Year, saving Ghana at the event which took place at Eko Convention Centre, Lagos Nigeria on Saturday, February 11,2023.

He beat the likes of South Africa’s Nasty C and AKA, Nigeria’s Blaqbones, Ladipoe, as well as Kenya’s Khaligraph to win the award.

The other categories in which Black Sherif earned nods include Best New MVP, Listener’s Choice, Viewer’s Choice and Best Collaboration.

Black Sherif’s latest win is a good sign that the 2022 3Music Awards Artiste of the Year winner is back to his winning ways again after having a good score in 2022.

In October last year, he dropped The Villain I Never Was which went on to receive massive streams and good reviews across the various digital streaming platform spectrum.

The Soundcity MVP Awards, which transitioned from the famous Soundcity Video Music Awards (SMVA) in 2016, recognises outstanding achievements of African artistes in 15 various music categories including Best Male MVP, Best Female MVP, Song of the Year, Music Video of the Year, African Artiste of the Year, African DJ of the Year, Best HipHop.

Also, the non-music/ Special Recognition Awards are in Philanthropy, Sports, Community, and Social Development, Social Entrepreneurship, and Contribution to the growth of Music.

Last Saturday’s event had performances from Ghana’s Gyakie, Ayra Starr, Bad Boy Timz, Seyi Vibez, Ruger, Black Sherif among others.

Apart from Black Sherif, other winners were Burna Boy (African Artiste of the Year), Rema (Digital Artiste of the Year), Asake (Male MVP), Tems (Female MVP) and Kizz Daniel’s Buga featuring Tekno won Song of the Year.
