‘All I wanted was a crown’
Five. That is the number of times Miss Abena Appiah, has participated in various beauty pageants to eventually grab the title of Miss Universe Ghana 2014.

Emerging the ultimate winner of a beauty pageant has been a long cherished dream for the fifth time lucky beauty queen who has participated in Miss Malaika, Miss Ghana 2012, Miss Earth 2012 and Top Model Ghana 2013.
“Everybody has a dream and for me, it was to win a crown and now I am Miss Universe Ghana 2014. This is the fifth time I am participating in five different beauty pageants in three years and it’s all because I wanted the crown. I wanted to win so badly that I was prepared to even go through 100 pageants to get it.
“As a child, I used to stand in front of the mirror modelling and referring to myself as Miss Ghana so you see, all my life I just wanted to be a beauty queen and now that I have, my soul is happy and I can go to rest now,” she told Showbiz at the Kotoka International Airport a few hours before she boarded a flight to New York last week Wednesday.
Miss Appiah who has won various awards in a number of categories in the pageants she has taken part in said “Yes, I won those titles but you see, those come with nothing, no crown and no platform. These are titles that just acknowledge my talents but I wanted the overall title and only then would I be satisfied.”
Asked if it was not greed that pushed her to enter all these competitions, Miss Universe 2014 refuted that saying it was rather determination and the quest not to settle for less.
“I am not greedy; I simply wanted the ultimate because of what comes with it. Look, once you emerge the overall, all locked doors are opened to you, you get the exposure, you get to meet people, the recognition is assured and you can champion whatever agenda you have. But with those awards, you can’t do anything I wanted to do more.
“I want to be able to impact my society positively so I thought gaining that title will help me push my agenda of creating awareness on cervical cancer and ebola.
“I urge all Ghanaians to work hard, believe in themselves and they should not allow circumstances stop them for as long as they are alive, their dreams are still valid,” she added.
Abena, a student of Radford University College reading Fashion, is currently in New York with other Miss Universe winners from other countries for a grooming process to prepare them for the Miss Universe finale which will be held in Florida in January next year.
