Kuurimah asks ‘Why?’

Many artistes are drawn to various themes in the composition of their songs and for new artiste, Kuurimah Umuhera, who hails from Upper West region, addressing female genital mutilation is her theme of choice.

On her debut single, Why, which was released a few weeks ago, the  former student of the Wa Islamic School, called on the government and other civil societies to stand up for the fight against female genital mutilation which she described as a “death trap” in the song.

A victim herself, Kuurimah on Why, which features Afro Pop artiste, Wiyaala, passionately sings about how many young ladies have been deprived the gift of life because of this atrocious act.

In a slow tempo vein laced with some traditional instruments like the Kologo to produce an indigenous sound that is common with natives from Upper West and people from the Northern and Upper East regions, she pleads with perpetrators of the act to desist from it.

She sings about how many girls who undergo the “surgery” are deprived the precious part of their bodies just to satisfy the demands of an archaic culture.

Wiyaala also adds her voice to the call when she sings, “Tell me why you have taken the one thing that could have made my life a joy, tell me why you took away my smile, my pride, my womanhood”.

In an interview with Showbiz last week Thursday, Kuurimah, who has currently put on hold her schooling at the University of Development Studies in Tamale due to threats from some elders in her community, said music is the only means she can make the world know of her sorrow remarking, “This is torture not culture”.

“I am the best person to talk to my people. They need education to enlighten them about the pain they put the victims through. This is not the right way to keep a woman’s purity all in the name of culture. There must be a change,” she stated.

She called on the government to put in place stringent measures that will halt the practice which is claiming lives.
