Make our politics tolerable

On numerous occasions, Showbiz has expressed support for entertainers who have chosen to venture into politics either by endorsing political parties and candidates or by putting themselves up for elections.

Unfortunately, many Ghanaians are still of the erroneous notion that entertainers do not belong in politics and have vilified those who choose to dabble in politics.

Showbiz wishes to state once again that there is nothing wrong with entertainers entering the world of politics. In fact, it is a very healthy practice for our democracy and one of the sure ways of deepening the democratic credentials of a fledgling democracy such as ours.

This is a common practice the world over and there is no reason why same cannot happen in Ghana. The sad reality is that in the past, we have had entertainers who were blacklisted by fellow industry persons due to their political affiliations. As a nation, we need to go beyond such petty actions.

Regardless of political affiliations, what we should be working for is the growth and sustenance of the entertainment industry.

What we have to do as a people is to be tolerant of divergent views and choices. There is no point attacking the personalities of entertainers when we do not agree with the choice of political party.

To add to that, the passage of the Film Bill into law potentially spells a new era for the struggling film industry in the country.

Even as the current government has pledged its desire to work together with entertainers to spur growth in the sector, it is important that we set aside all differences that exist as a result of politics in order to build the industry.
