Kamel's death shocks all

During the crisis, he regularly appealed to the people not do disturb the peace of the area but continue to co-exist in the interest of peace and development.

It was, therefore, not surprising that the entire Gbi State, led by its Paramount Chief, Togbega Gabusu, expressed deep shock at Mr Kamel’s demise. Indeed on one of the radio stations, Togbega Gabusu eulogised the minister with a solemn hymn.

From the south to the north of the Volta Region, all those who heard about the regional minister’s death were in a state of disbelief and shock. They said the minister had worked diligently to break the north-south divide in the region.

In our part of the world, people hardly talk ill of the dead. We loathe the living and love the dead, so they say. Those who have expressed shock at the death of Mr Kamel’s death, describing him as a peace maker, hardworking and affable, did so out of concern for his sudden departure. Anybody who even casually came into contact with the regional minister can attest to his good character.

Every step that Mr Kamel took in the region was meant to change the fortunes of the people and he took that step in consultations with the stakeholders.

As human beings, we all have our weaknesses, and, certainly, Mr Kamel had his. That notwithstanding, he worked for the good of the region in particular and the nation as a whole.

Death is an inevitable end to man’s existence on earth. But it is such a painful experience that we should not wish for anybody. That explains why the DAILY GRAPHIC has constantly called on all to bond to build a strong country where everybody can earn a decent keep.

Mr Kamel worked tirelessly to accomplish the promise made by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to construct the Eastern Corridor road. Unfortunately, he could not live to witness the fulfilment of that dream, although a lot of effort has gone into the execution of the project.

However, the regional minister will be happy that he played a role in the establishment of the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS).

When the history of the Fourth Republic comes to be written, Mr Kamel’s name will have pride of place, in tune with St Paul’s Epistle to the Romans in 2 Timothy 4:7 — “I have fought a good fight, I have finished the race and I have kept the faith, henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day and not to me only but onto all them, also that love his appearance.”

Mr Kamel, we miss you, but we know the Good Lord will give you a resting place in His bosom.
