A step in the right direction, Sarkodie

Rappers Sarkodie is without doubt one of the biggest artistes in the country.

His status and international appeal within and outside Ghana is unmatched judging from the multitudes of fans who fill every arena in which he performs. Even as Showbiz admits that Sarkodie is a great artiste, there is still room to grow and expand.

The Sony music distribution deal for Sarkodie’s new album Highest, if confirmed, might be what Sarkodie’s career needs to propel him to the next level. Sony Music is one of the biggest distribution outfits in the world with their sphere of influence stretching across countries and music genres.

Sarkodie’s album on Sony Music will open him up to a totally new audience worldwide and potentially bigger revenue stream. The expanded audience means that Sarkodie gets invited to many more events and even potentially collaborates with international artistes.

One of the biggest complaints in the Ghanaian music scene is that sales from albums are virtually non-existent and so artistes rely exclusively on playing shows to finance their activities. A distribution deal with a company like Sony Music will mean that depending on how well the album performs, Sarkodie can also earn an appreciable amount of money from his album sales as well.

Sarkodie has been the pacesetter in the music scene in many different areas and it is the hope of Showbiz that he does same in relation to this new distribution deal if confirmed. Showbiz is keeping its fingers crossed and prays this deal is not another talk shop. It is about time Ghanaian artistes adopt an international approach to their craft and this will eventually translate into more sales and bigger audience across the globe.
