Two people died on the spot when a refuse truck crashed into a Nissan Terrano vehicle at the Reiss Junction on the Madina-Adenta road in Accra yesterday.
The refuse truck, belonging to Zoomlion, was moving from Madina to Pantang, while the Nissan Terrano 4X4 was heading to Ashale Botwe from Agbogba when the accident occurred at the intersection at Reiss.
After crashing into the Nissan Terrano, the refuse truck dragged the vehicle, with registration number GR9333-Z, about 50 metres onto the pavement of the right side of the Madina-Adenta road.
In the process, the truck, with registration number GT 1982-12, sat on the Nissan Terrano, crushing the two people to death.
According to an eyewitness account, the two, who are yet to be identified, could be in their 30s.
The account had it that the driver of the Zoomlion truck, apparently realising that his life could be in danger, took to his heels shortly after the incident.
“Everyone here was busy trying to help the victims and so before we realised, he was gone,” a witness who gave his name only as Osei told the Daily Graphic at the scene of the accident.
Osei said personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) quickly rushed to the scene but they did not immediately have a towing truck to remove the Zoomlion truck from the Nissan Terrano.
“It was later that they brought the towing truck, along with a machine that was used to cut the Nissan Terrano into pieces in order to retrieve the bodies of the deceased,” he explained.
Osei was quick to add that there had been no policemen at the junction to direct traffic when the incident happened, saying, “It was after the accident had happened that policemen came back to post to direct traffic.”
Some policemen who were at the scene, however, refused to comment on the accident, except to give an assurance that investigations would be conducted to get to the bottom of the matter.
