According to her, a joint research conducted by the European Union and the Ghana Employers Association revealed that an estimated $200 million is lost to Ghana’s economy and that excludes the human cost; hence, the need for a joint effort to reverse the trend.

Mrs Nweke said this at the launch of the Philips “Buy Original" campaign to highlight the existence of counterfeit products in Ghana and West Africa and to empower consumers to be on the lookout for original products.

She said as part of the campaign, the company would introduce effective measures for consumers to be able to easily identify and verify their original consumer appliances and lighting products.

Mrs Nweke urged the public to become more vigilant and question products that seem to be unusually cheap, appear poorly made or had generic packaging, especially when shopping at traditional stores.

The General Manager, Lighting, of Philips West Africa, Mr Felix Darko, said an "original" security holographic sticker had been placed on the packaging of Philips consumer appliances and baby products to phase out counterfeit Philips products on the Ghanaian market.

He, therefore, advised consumers of their products to make sure to find a unique code on the security label on the packaging.

He said in Ghana, consumers could send the 16-digit code to 3110 to receive verification of the baby products they bought.
