Organisations urged to address vulnerabilities in cyber-security

The Head of Information Security at Stanbic Bank Ghana, Mr Albert Yirenchi Danquah, has urged organisations to take a comprehensive and unified view at cyber-security vulnerabilities in the country.

He said that was critical because every vulnerability in cyber-security was a potential risk.

He was speaking at the 2022 State of Cyber-security Posture Webinar, hosted by Cybersecurity Insiders.

He said the vulnerabilities taken in isolation could be a dangerous enterprise because those could easily escalate.

“Taking a unified view to vulnerabilities is critical because in cyber-security, everything is a risk. It is not the best if we look at cyber-security in isolation because one vulnerability can multiply and escalate risks.

“The real cyber-security risks that an organisation faces come into view when there is a comprehensive and unified consideration,” he stated.

Prioritise cyber-security

Mr Yirenchi Danquah further noted that even though all vulnerabilities were important, it was critical to prioritise cyber-security vulnerabilities, depending on the kind of asset the vulnerability affects, the location of the asset on the network, as well as its value.

“As our network infrastructure becomes more complex and widespread, it becomes harder to prioritise. However, prioritising vulnerabilities helps in attacking which ones present the most risks for a focused and targeted intervention.

“And every organisation, depending on what they do, will inform their priorities relative to cyber-security”, he stated.

He also advised organisations to, as much as possible, quantify risk in monetary terms as that would help in the prioritisation of remediation, given the constant limitation on human and capital resources.
