The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MTN Ghana, Mr Serame Taukobong, has stated that MTN Mobile Money is targeting micro-finance companies to enable its customers to receive their loan disbursement and repayment through their Mobile Money wallets.
This is part of the company’s efforts at forming more strategic partnerships with organisations that are more into cash management services.
“In this regard, Mobile Money is in partnership with the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection in the disbursement of funds to Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) beneficiaries across the country,” he stated.
Mr Taukobong revealed this in a speech read on his behalf at the launch of the 3rd Mobile Money month on August 6.
He said there were many more partnerships being pursued with insurance companies, education institutions and organisations to ensure that their transactions were done through MTN Mobile Money.
The CEO also noted that the Mobile Money system now had more than a million users and more than 6.5 million transactions per month, describing the platform as a “great success story.”
The Senior Manager of MTN Mobile Money, Mr Eli Hini, also pointed out that MTN’s long-term goal and objective was to transform the Ghanaian economy into a cashless society.
“We want to make Mobile Money an increasingly common and everyday service to the extent that common transactions such as paying for a taxi journey will be made through Mobile Money,” he said.
“It has happened in other markets; in Kenya it’s happening, so we believe it is possible too in Ghana,” he added.
Mr Hini also revealed MTN’s plans for the service to be employed in the payment of academic fees.
“With each institution, as well as its respective students having IDs within the system, an option is available within the Mobile Money menu that makes this transaction possible via the user’s device. “At the school level, we also give them a platform to check the payments they have received, and the payments will come with all the relevant details; who has paid, how much has been paid, when the payment was done and which period’s fee have been paid,” he stated.
