ICAG endorses Graphic Business tertiary business quiz

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Institute of Chartered Accountants Ghana (ICAG), Mr Paul Kwasi Agyeman, has said the Tertiary Business Sense Challenge (TBSC), spearheaded by the Graphic Business, the leading financial newspaper in the country, holds the potential to transform the country’s business environment for the better.

According to him, organising the TBSC periodically would not only test and develop the business skills of university students, but also enable business owners and executives to learn and run their organisations in accordance with best practice.

Mr Agyeman said this in an interview ahead of TBSC’s second edition launch of the challenge yesterday, in Accra.

The TBSC

The launch of the 2020 edition of the Graphic Business Tertiary Business Sense Challenge is scheduled for Monday, February 4, 2020, at the TV3 Executive Theatre at Kanda in Accra.

Tertiary institutions that have confirmed to take part in the 2020 contest include University of Cape Coast (UCC), University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), University of Ghana Business School (UGBS), Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Accra Technical University (ATU), Radford University, AIT and All Nations University.

The rest are the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) and Central University.

The Ghana Technology University College, Wisconsin, Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), Bluecrest and the University for Development Studies (UDS) have also confirmed their participation in the second edition of the contest.

Sponsorship

The Ministry of Business Development and other corporate institutions are sponsoring the 2020 TBSC.

The corporate sponsors include Accra Brewery Ltd (ABL), and PricewaterhouseCoopers (Pwc). YFM and Media General, operators of TV3, are the media partners for the competition.

Opportunity is still available for other corporate organisations that are interested in sponsoring the competition.

The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), The Chartered Institute of Marketing Ghana (CIMG), and The Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ghana (ICAG) are providing technical support for the contest.

ICAG’s support

Supporting the contest, Mr Agyeman said, ICAG would provide support in the area of questions and other resources to manage and ensure the success of the quiz.

“We had somebody within us last year, for instance, as the quizmaster, if we had chosen a different person, I am sure the person would not have had an in-depth knowledge of the issues coming up,” he said.

According to him, ICAG decided to sponsor the TBSC because it had the potential to be the springboard for the development of future captains of industry.

“We joined the TBSC because it is an important initiative to encourage students to develop their capacities for the job market,” he said.

The CEO also commended the GCGL for creating and spearheading the TBSC, an inter-tertiary business school quiz that seeks to test and develop the business skills of students.

About ICAG

Since the mid-60s, the institute has been providing accountancy training at both technician and professional levels.

However, in those early days, pass rates at various levels were impeded by the non-availability of reading materials for students. This trend experienced a turnaround in the 80s and has seen a major boost since accounting manuals for the four (levels) were introduced in November 2008.

The establishment of the ICAG College in June 2009 augmented the institute’s effort to provide readily available tuition to prospective and regular students on part-time and regular streams.

This ties in with the Institute’s bid to provide quality tuition at the three levels (that is, Parts 1-3) in a conducive learning environment at the ICAG College.
