Graphic business, the financial and business newspaper in the Graphic Communication Group Limited’s stable, has been adjudged the Best Business and Financial Newspaper for the Year 2013 at the Gold Awards for Business Journalism held in Accra over the weekend.
A financial journalist with the paper, Mr Charles Benoni Okine who is acting. Editor, of Graphic Business was adjudged the Best ICT Reporter of the Year, while Mr Sulieman Mustapha, also a journalist of the paper, annexed the Best Newspaper Reporter (Print Category) award.
The awards ceremony was organised by the Masoe Productions West Africa and the Institute of Financial and Economic Journalists (IFEJ), with support from the World Bank, to recognise the works of financial and business journalists and newspapers in the development of the country.
Maiden awards
In the maiden awards held last year, Mr Samuel Doe Ablordeppey, Staff Writer of the Graphic Business won the Overall Best Business Reporter of the Year, 2012, which earned him a fully sponsored trip by the World Bank to attend the Spring Meetings in Washington DC.
The Group Head of Corporate Communications of Access Bank, Mrs Matilda Asante Asiedu, who spoke on behalf of the awards jury, congratulated the award winners for their sterling performances which earned them the awards.
“While we acknowledge your efforts that won you the awards, we also believe that there is more room for improvement as far as business and financial reporting in the country is concerned,” she said.
Mrs Asiedu urged financial journalists in the country to do more to improve their quality and standard of business and financial reportage to enable them to match the class of the big international financial newspapers.
Mr Okine, in his reaction after receiving the award, described the achievement as a “recognition for hard- work and dedication to duty.”
“We are glad that the Graphic Business, in the last five years, has its reporters winning awards, an indication that the stories we churn out meet the expectations of the reading public,” he said.
Mr Okine said the award had thrown another challenge to the paper to work harder to win more laurels in the future and to meet the satisfaction of its readers.
