Ghana Electrometer supportss communities with 790,000 meters

The Ghana Electrometer Company (GEM) says it has distributed over 790,000 meters to regional capitals and other communities nation-wide.

The quantity is made up of 350,000 credit meters and 440,000 prepayment meters. 

The beneficiary communities include Koforidua, Ho, Takoradi, Sekondi, Cape Coast, Kasoa, Kumasi, Accra, Tema, Tafo, Hohoe, Swedru, Nkawkaw and Afienya.

The Director of Operations and External Relations at GEM, Mr Obed Solomon, disclosed this to the GRAPHIC BUSINESS on the sidelines of a workshop on metering in Accra.

The workshop was on the theme: ‘Powering Ghana Energy Sector Through Smart Metering Solution.’ 

He said the company had been providing the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Ministry of Energy with electricity meters. Beyond that it also undertakes after-sales technical support services for the two institutions, Mr Solomon said.

 He said the company’s range of meters included single-phase credit electromechanical meter, three-phase credit electromechanical meter, single-phase multi-tariff tamper-proof electronic credit meter, three-phased multi tariff tamper-proof electronic credit meter, single phase pre-paid electro-cash meter, three-phased pre-paid electro-cash meter.

He praised the GEM’s partnership with Elsewedy Electrometer of Egypt, explaining that the partnership gave his outfit the requisite technology, skill and capacity to offer a new generation of electronic meters with modern technologies to the Ghana and West African markets.

He indicated that the company’s certified meters had features, including measuring electricity consumption, tamper proof , multi-tariff, meter data collection, revenue collection, network losses measurement, upgradable meter hardware, high accuracy, peak demand monitoring, load limit control, auto billing process, customer self-service and on-line control.

GEM was established in 2003 in response to the increasing requirement for quality electricity meters. 

It has since developed into a specialised fully integrated electricity metering solutions company.

GEM is the only locally based electric meters assembly company in Ghana and provides jobs to over three hundred Ghanaians.GB
